Ullswater is one of the most beloved of the waters of the Lake District, and the largest after Windermere. It stretches for nine miles and forms part of the border of two counties, Cumberland and Westmorland. Its head is amongst the Lake District’s rugged fells, and at its foot at Pooley Bridge in Edendale, the River Eamont emerges. Here there are sailing boats for hire: an incomparable way to explore the lake, if you can sail.
You can admire Ullswater from land from the Ullswater Way, and see if it is as they say, the most beautiful of the English lakes.
The walk circumnavigates the lake, from and to Pooley Bridge at its foot, following the shore, and climbing the slopes of the surrounding fells.
The Eamont Way meets the Ullswater Way at Pooley Bridge, which could make for a long, enjoyable walk.
