The British Antarctic Territory encompasses all islands and territories (c.660,000 square miles) between 20° W and 80° W, south of 60° S. It was formerly the major part of the Falklands Islands Dependency and was named the British Antarctic Territory and constituted as a separate colony by Order in Council dated 26 February 1962, following its inclusion in the Antarctic Treaty area in 1961'
