in SE entrance of Antarctic Sound between Andersson Island and Dundee Island, was roughly charted by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1837-40, on 27 February 1838 and referred to as 'íle presumée', while the name IÎle Rosamel was applied collectively to Andersson Island and Jonassen Island (q.v.) after Vice-amiral Claude du Campe, Baron de Rosamel (1774-1848), French Minister of Marine and Colonies, 1836-39, under whose orders the expedition sailed. The island was recharted by the Swedish Antarctic Expedition in January 1902 as Jul Insel [=Christmas island] but later Rosamel Insel, the French Antarctic Expedition name being re-applied to the present feature. The island was surveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey from 'Hope Bay', 1945-47.
