The name Islas Quirihue was applied by the Chilean Antarctic Expedition, 1947, collectively to these islands and to the adjoining Darbel Islands, after the town of Quirihue in S Chile. The islands were photographed from the air by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition, 1956-57, and surveyed from the ground by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey from 'Detaille Island', 1958-59; in association with the names of glaciologists grouped in this area, named after Philip George Owston (b.1921), British crystallographer who interpreted X-ray difffraction work on ice in terms of the structure and movement of molecules.
