Lavoisier Island

(Biscoe Islands)

British Antarctic Territory

Location: 66° 12' 15" S 66° 41' 28" W
one of the Biscoe Islands (q.v.), SW of Pendleton Strait, was roughly charted by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1903-05, and named IÎle Nansen after Dr F. Nansen (Nansen Island, q.v.). Following air photography by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition, 1956-57, and in association with the names of pioneers of cold-climate physiology grouped in this area, the island was renamed Lavoisier Island after Antoine Laurent Lavoisier (1743-94), French chemist who pioneered the study of metabolism and first established the main facts about heat production in animals and man in c. 1780.
