(Deception Island)
British Antarctic Territory
Location: 63° 1' 18" S 60° 34' 35" W
ESE of South Point, Deception Island, was charted by Foster in 1829; sometime after 1905 named descriptively by Norwegian whalers Laavbrua [=threshing floor bridge (a ramp in Norwegian barns)] or Låvebrua; recharted by Discovery Investigations in 1927. The island was recharted by an RN Hydrographic Survey Unit, 1948-49, and called Jon Islet after the younger son of Lieut. Cdr D.N. Penfold, RN (Penfold Point, q.v.), in charge of the Survey Unit; later renamed Låvebrua Islet.
