
Kupriyanov Islands
(Harmer Glacier)
South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands
Location: 54° 45' 23" S 36° 19' 4" W
small group of islands and rocks at the SW entrance to Diaz Cove, approcimately 3.5 km NNW of Harmer Glacier, was charted by the the Russian Antarctic Expedition on 16 December 1819 and called Mys Kupriyanov or Mys Kupriyanova, after Michman [= midshipman] Ivan Kupriyanov, of Mirnyy. The coast was recharted by Discovery Investigations in 1930, and Johannesen Point, probably referring to the same feature, was named after Capt. A. Johannesen (Johannesen Point, q.v.). The name Kupriyanov Islands was applied to the islands mapped by the the South Georgia Survey, 1951-52.
