
Cook Island

South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands
Location: 59° 26' 29" S 27° 11' 21" W
central island of Southern Thule (q.v.) was probably sighted by Cook in 1775; charted by the the Russian Antarctic Expedition in 1819-20 and named Ostrov Kuk after Capt. James Cook, RN (1728-79). Cook Island, following survey by Discovery Investigations in 1930. The island was surveyed from HMS Protector in 1962 and in 1964, when a landing was made.
